Who Was
Jean Price-Mars?
Jean Price-Mars (1876–1969) was a Haitian diplomat, physician, anthropologist, and writer — one of the most towering intellectual figures the Caribbean has ever produced.
His landmark 1928 work Ainsi Parla l'Oncle ("So Spoke the Uncle") was a revolutionary defence of Haitian folk culture and African heritage at a time when Haiti was under US occupation.
He inspired the Négritude movement, shaped generations of Caribbean thinkers, and spent his life insisting that Haitian culture — Vodou, Creole language, folk traditions — was not something to be ashamed of, but proudly celebrated.
We carry his name as a promise: to continue that work of cultural affirmation and intellectual courage for every generation to come.
How We Got Here
JPMCO was established in Florida with a founding mission to serve the Haitian diaspora through cultural programming, intellectual exchange, and community solidarity.
Our inaugural events brought together Haitian-Americans across Florida, sparking conversations about identity, heritage, and collective action for Haiti's future.
We launched dedicated literary programmes supporting Haitian and Caribbean authors, alongside art exhibitions bringing Haitian creativity to wider audiences across the US.
Our landmark Digital Decade exhibition by Antony Gargasz celebrated ten years of Haitian digital creativity, drawing community members from across the country.
With members across 12+ countries and thousands strong, JPMCO continues to grow as the premier cultural nonprofit for the Haitian diaspora in the United States.
